Multi-media Sculpture
I explored the use of different materials to make imaginative pieces that portray deeper ideas of environmental impacts of consumerism. Through these pieces I experiment with new ways of construction as well as how different materials can convey different meanings.
The Folly of Beast is Always Outdone by the Greed of Man.
This piece was inspired by pollution and overconsumption. I wanted to present the image of a whale devastated by pollution in an unconventional way. This piece is adorned with over 5000 pear beads. I used plastic imitation pearls to highlight the idea of a precious material bastardized by consumerism. I wanted to make something beautiful that would invite people to take a closer look. Upon closer inspection, viewers can interpret the more serious messaging about pollution.
The name for this piece, like the whales white coloring, was influenced by the book Moby Dick. The three candles present in this piece are used to represent the past, present, and future. In the past, we prioritized using whale oil to light our cities, causing their population to come close to extinction. Presently, we are still harming our oceans through our excessive plastic pollution. These candles are a physical representation of the limited time we have to prevent total destruction of one of Earths most important ecosystems.
Manifest Migration
When I was thinking about my experience moving I thought about the vulnerability that comes with that. To move to a new place is to leave behind everything you've known and build something new. For this crab, I used soft materials to show this vulnerable transition. Similar to crabs that have recently molted their shells, the front of my sculpture is created from felt and fabric to give it a squishy, malleable appearance.
Guiding Light
Guiding light is a tribute to the light house as both a monumental structure and a commoditized object. The light house as an image is something commonly seen in souvenir shops and coastal themed merchandise. I feel that the true beauty of the light house is often lost. When creating this piece, I thought about the light houses purpose and capacity for storytelling.
Light houses are structures built to help generations of sailors pass safely through torturous waters. The light is something alluring that warns of danger. To be successful in its purpose, it must be viewed from a distance. When creating this piece, I wanted to eliminate that distance through the asymmetrical construction and weathered look I wanted to give it a whimsical, almost storybook like appearance. In the presentation of this piece, I wish to invite viewers to create their own stories about this light house. Like a doll house which allows tactile play I want this to be an artwork that encourages the mind to imagine.
